Porch Light for Clara

Forty-one winters on this hill Your rocking chair is sitting still I kept the kettle warm today Out of habit, I suppose, some way The kids call Sundays, ask me how I've been I tell 'em fine, and pour the coffee thin So I leave the porch light on for Clara Just in case the Lord says she can visit A yellow glow against the dark Nebraska Old men learn to hope, and never quit it Found your garden gloves inside the shed Tulip bulbs you never got to spread I planted every one along the fence Spring will make a little bit of sense And when my own last evening comes around Won't need a map to find you, I'll just follow That light I kept So I leave the porch light on for Clara Just in case the Lord says she can visit A yellow glow against the dark Nebraska Old men learn to hope, and never quit it
