Woke up this morning, rain on the windowpane
Woke up this morning, rain on the windowpane
Got that muddy water risin', washin' out my name
Oh, the muddy water blues, it's pullin' at my soul
Muddy water blues, done took its lonesome toll
I've been down so long, Lord, I forgot the way back home
My baby left on a Sunday, took the last freight train
My baby left on a Sunday, took the last freight train
Now I'm sittin' by the river, singin' with the falling rain
Oh, the muddy water blues, it's pullin' at my soul
Muddy water blues, done took its lonesome toll
I've been down so long, Lord, I forgot the way back home
Slide guitar cryin', organ moanin' low
Some kinda sorrow only the river gets to know
